Denouncing the “me-first” approach of the wealthier nations, the WHO head also deplored vaccine manufacturers for seeking approval from rich nations rather than approaching WHO that can give a nod to its global use.

NEW DELHI: Bird flu in poultry birds has been confirmed in a few more districts of Kerala and Maharashtra, while culling operations are continuing in epicentres, the Centre said on Tuesday. The disease has been confirmed in other birds such as crow and migratory birds in Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh as well as in Rupnagar district of Punjab. So far, bird flu cases have been reported in total 12 states across the country, out of which five Haryana, Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh have confirmed the disease in poultry birds, it said. In India, bird flu or avian influenza is spread mainly by migratory birds coming into the country during winter months between September and March. The disease is zoonotic.
